How to Repair Your Summer-Damaged Hair: An Aveda Recovery Plan for Columbus

Hair Care

Have you noticed that as August winds down, your hair looks and feels a little worse for wear? You are not imagining it. Between high heat, UV exposure, chlorine, lake water, humidity, and the heat styling you do to fight all of the above, breakage and split ends by end of summer are close to inevitable.

The good news: damage is repairable. At SAP Salon in Columbus we spend every late summer doing exactly this — rebuilding, rehydrating, and resetting hair with 100% vegan [Aveda](https://shop.aveda.com/salon/sapsalon614) treatments so our guests walk into fall with hair that looks brand new.

Here is the full recovery plan, straight from our chairs.

The Four Culprits Behind Summer Damage

There are four notorious offenders when it comes to wrecking hair over a Columbus summer, and each one damages hair differently.

The sun. UV rays break down the lipid layer that keeps the cuticle smooth and sealed. They also oxidize color — which is why your gloss faded three weeks earlier than usual this year and why brunettes go brassy and blondes go straw-toned by August.

The pool. Chlorine is a stripper by design. It removes oils, roughens the cuticle, and creates the perfect conditions for split ends. On lightened hair it also binds with copper in the water, which is what actually causes the greenish cast people blame on chlorine itself.

The lake and ocean. Salt water pulls moisture out of the hair shaft by osmosis. That gritty, "beachy" texture everyone loves is literally your hair drying out.

The wind — and Ohio humidity. Wind whips hair into tangles that cause mechanical breakage when you brush them out. Humidity swells the cuticle so it never fully lies flat, which is why frizz at the nape becomes a daily fight from June through September.

Add the blow dryer and flat iron you use to counteract all of that, and you have a full season of cumulative stress.

What "Damaged Hair" Actually Means

Hair is not alive. Once a strand leaves the follicle it cannot heal itself the way skin does — everything it gets, it gets from you.

Each strand has three layers:

  • The cuticle — overlapping scales on the outside. When they lie flat, hair shines. When they lift, hair looks dull, tangles, and loses moisture.
  • The cortex — the thick middle layer holding the protein bonds that give hair strength and elasticity. Bleach, heat, and UV break those bonds.
  • The medulla — the innermost core.

Real repair has to address all three layers. That is precisely what Aveda's Botanical Repair technology was built to do: a plant-derived blend of green tea, sacha inchi, and organic pomegranate oil that works into the cuticle, cortex, and medulla to rebuild bonds from the inside out.

So when we say repair, we are not talking about a conditioner that coats a strand and washes off. We are talking about structural work.

Step 1: Add Hydration Back In

Before you reach for anything intensive, start with daily moisture. Most summer-damaged hair is dehydrated first and broken second — and dehydrated hair breaks far more easily.

Our starting point is almost always Nutriplenish™ daily moisturizing treatment, a rich leave-in cream you apply to damp hair after every wash. It uses a superfood blend of oils and butters to melt moisture back into the strand and lock in significantly more hydration than untreated hair.

Two ingredients matter most here:

  • Sand ginger, which acts as a naturally derived UV filter — so you are protecting against the sun while you repair the damage it already did.
  • Organic pomegranate seed oil, rich in omega-5, which revives brittle strands and brings back strength and shine.

It also gives heat protection, which matters for the next step.

Pair it with the Nutriplenish shampoo and conditioner in Light Moisture for fine hair or Deep Moisture for thick, coarse, or curly hair. Columbus guests with fine hair often over-condition in a panic after summer and end up limp — matching the weight to your hair type is half the battle.

Step 2: Choose the Right Repair Treatment

Hydration is maintenance. Repair is intervention. For that, once or twice a week, use a masque.

Botanical Repair™ intensive strengthening masque: light is the pick for fine to normal hair. It strengthens and rebuilds bonds without weighing hair down — a real concern if you have fine Columbus hair that goes flat in humidity anyway.

Botanical Repair™ intensive strengthening masque: rich contains roughly twice the plant lipids plus added butters, and is built for medium to thick, coarse, curly, or heavily lightened hair. If you have been highlighting all summer, this is your masque.

Both take about five to seven minutes in the shower. Apply from mid-length to ends on damp, towel-blotted hair, comb through, then rinse thoroughly.

If you heat style often, add Botanical Repair™ strengthening leave-in treatment. It detangles, reduces frizz, helps prevent breakage, and protects against heat up to 450°F. For anyone who blow-dries and flat irons in the same session, it is non-negotiable.

How often? One to two times a week for maintenance. For hair that is genuinely fried, three times a week for the first two weeks, then back down. More is not better — over-proteinizing hair can make it stiff and brittle.

Step 3: Leave It to the Pros

There is a real case for letting a professional handle the heavy lifting.

Our in-salon Botanical Repair™ professional treatment at SAP Salon works at a concentration and processing temperature you simply cannot reproduce at home. One treatment visibly transforms dry, damaged hair into stronger, softer, shinier, smoother strands — and the results build with each service.

A typical Columbus fall reset appointment with us looks like this:

  1. A consultation where we assess porosity, elasticity, and how much of the damage is breakage versus dehydration
  2. A clarifying or chelating cleanse to remove chlorine, mineral buildup, and product residue from the summer
  3. The Botanical Repair professional treatment, applied in sections with heat
  4. A gloss or toner if summer sun shifted your color — this is the single fastest way to look "put together" again
  5. A precision trim to remove split ends
  6. A blow-dry and a take-home plan tailored to your hair

Most guests book this in late August or early September, right before OSU move-in weekend chaos and the start of wedding season's fall stretch.

Step 4: Rethink Your Heat Styling

You do not need to give up your blow dryer. You do need to be smarter with it.

  • Always apply heat protection — the leave-in treatments above cover this
  • Drop your flat iron temperature. Fine or color-treated hair rarely needs more than 300–350°F; coarse hair rarely needs above 400°F
  • Rough-dry to 80% before you pick up a round brush, so you are not holding hot air on wet hair
  • Finish with the cool shot to set the cuticle flat — it locks in shine and buys you an extra day between washes
  • Take at least one air-dry day per week

Step 5: Trim What Cannot Be Saved

This is the part nobody wants to hear. A split end cannot be fused back together — any product claiming to permanently mend one is temporarily gluing it. Left alone, that split travels up the shaft and costs you more length than the trim would have.

A quarter to a half inch every eight to twelve weeks keeps ends clean and actually helps hair look longer, because blunt, healthy ends read as fuller. After a hard summer, plan on a slightly deeper trim in September and then get back on schedule.

Your 4-Week Columbus Recovery Calendar

Week 1 — Reset. Clarifying wash to strip chlorine and mineral buildup. Botanical Repair masque. Book your salon appointment. No flat iron this week.

Week 2 — Rebuild. Nutriplenish shampoo and conditioner. Masque twice. Leave-in treatment every wash. One air-dry day.

Week 3 — Professional treatment. In-salon Botanical Repair, gloss if needed, and a trim at SAP Salon.

Week 4 — Maintain. Masque once. Daily leave-in. Reintroduce heat styling with protection and lower temperatures.

By the time the leaves turn in Clintonville, your hair should feel like a different head of hair.

Why This Matters in Columbus Specifically

Columbus runs a genuinely tough calendar for hair. Humid, sun-heavy summers followed by a hard-drying furnace season in winter means hair rarely gets a mild stretch to recover on its own. What you do in late August determines whether you enter winter with resilient hair or with hair that is already compromised before the first cold snap.

There is also the sustainability angle our guests care about. Every Aveda product we recommend is 100% vegan and cruelty-free, and as a Green Circle Salon, SAP Salon recovers up to 95% of the waste generated during your service — hair clippings, foils, color, and packaging included. Repairing your hair should not cost the planet anything.
